Diet typesThe South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a weight loss system invented by Miami-based cardiologist arthur agatston which emphasizes the consumption of "good carbs" instead of "bad carbohydrates" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Agatston developed his dietary regime for people who have cardiac problems, based on his analysis of scientific data on other weight loss studies. Approved foods include, canadian bacon, chicken breast, clams, feta cheese, almonds, lowfat or nonfat milk and certain vegetables, like black beans, eggplant and snow peas. The Glycaemic Index Diet The glycaemic index nutrition and weight loss system is linked to the glycaemic index, a chart showing types of food and a score representing the rapidity that the carbs of the food gets transformed to glucose in your system. The claim is that slow acting foods (ie with a low Glycaemic index score), suppress your appetite for longer and help you to cut down on food without feeling hungry. It is also very useful for diabetes sufferers, as the low GI types of food are helpful in managing rises in glucose levels. The Atkins’ Diet Although it originated back in the 1960s, the popular atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last few years. Popular with many famous celebrities, it claims to allow weight loss whilst still eating many foods that are not normally available to dieters, like beef and butter. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is referred to as a low carbohydrate, high protein, nutrition and weight loss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and, as a consequence, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a result, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The 'science' behind the atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbohydrates to burn into energy, it is the carbohydrates which are burned initially. If we reduce your consumption of carbohydrates, our bodies will burn up the fat we already carry and we will lose weight. This is the bit that is controversial, not all nutritionalists concur and a few allege that it might be hazardous. |
