Weight loss dietsThe South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a diet started by Florida-based cardiologist arthur agatston which encourages that dieters should eat "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbohydrates" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Agatston developed this diet as an aid to patients with heart conditions, as a result of his detailed study of scientific research on other weight loss regimes. Examples of good foods include, lean cuts of beef, turkey bacon, fish, parmesan cheese, peanuts, lowfat milk and some vegatables, like kidney beans, eggplant and water chestnuts. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi index nutrition and weight loss system is linked to the gi (or glycaemic index), a list showing foods and a score representing the speed that the carbohydrates of the food gets converted to glucose in your blood stream. The believe is that long-acting types of food (ie those foods with a low Glycaemic index score), will keep you feeling full for longer and help to eat less food without feeling you are missing out. It's also beneficial for diabetics, as the low GI types of food are beneficial in preventing rises in blood glucose levels. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition system first devised by Barry Sears in a series of books, publications and an associated website. The Zone diet is not particularly a weight reduction diet, however many zone diet followers find that they actually lose weight by following this system. The theory behind the Zone Diet is that if you manage to gain control of the levels of insulin and glucogen (two hormones produced naturally by your body), then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which, as a result puts one's body in a state of equilibrium which is a lot more healthy than usual, this is referred to as 'the zone'. Sears holds the theory that if you get into this 'zone', your body is much more efficient and, as a result, doesn't build up layers of fat. The most important technique of the zone system is to keep tight control over the exact ratio of carbs to proteins, and to dose yourself with large amounts of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils. The Atkins’ Diet Although it originated back in the 1960s, the famous atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last decade. Although not accepted by all scientists, it allows fat reduction whilst allowing you to eat many foods that are not normally available to dieters, for example beef and eggs. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet it is considered good to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that are on the banned list. It is often referred to as a high protein, low carb, nutrition and weightloss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. On the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a consequence, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The controversial theory behind the atkins diet is that even if our bodies use both fats and carbohydrates to convert into carbohydrates, it is the carbohydrates that are burned initially. If we cut down on carbs, we will consume the fat we already carry and we will reduce weight. This theory is divisive, not all experts are in agreement and some experts allege that it might be hazardous. |
