Diet informationThe Glycaemic Index Diet The glycaemic index nutrition and weightloss system is reliant on the gi (or glycaemic index), a list of foods and a score illustrating the ease that the carbohydrates of the food gets converted to glucose in your blood stream. The believe is that long-acting foods (ie those with a low Gi number), suppress your appetite for longer and help you to reduce your intake of food without feeling hungry. It's also extremeley useful for diabetics, as the low GI foods are useful in reducing rises in glucose secretion. The South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a diet invented by Dr. arthur agatston which emphasizes that one should consume "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbs" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Doctor agatston developed his nutritional system for people who have cardiac problems, based on his detailed analysis of scientific research completed on other weight loss systems. Good foods include, broiled ham, turkey breast, fish, low or fat free cheeses, almonds, lowfat yoghurt and certain vegetables, such as green beans, collard greens and spinach. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition and weightloss system initially advocated by Barry Sears in a number of books, publications and an accompanying website. The Zone diet is not specifically a fat reduction diet, although many followers find that they seem to lose a few pounds by following it. The science claimed for the Zone Diet is that if one can control the levels of two important hormones, (insulin and glucogen), then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which, in turn puts one's body in a balanced state that is much more healthy than usual, which followers of the diet, refer to as '"he zone". Sears states that if you get into this 'zone', your metabolism is working at its most efficient and, because of this, does not build up fat. The main process of the diet is to monitor and control the exact ratio of carbs to proteins, and to take large amounts of Omega 3 fish oils. The Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last decade. Although highly controversial, it supposedly allows weight loss whilst allowing many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, for example bacon and hard cheese. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet you eat protein and fat, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is referred to as a high protein, low carb, nutrition and weightloss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a result, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The theory of the atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbs to burn into energy, it is the carbohydrates that are burned primarily. If we cut down on carbs, our bodies will use up our fat and we will become thinner. This is the bit that is divisive, not all doctors are in agreement and some even think it can be risky. |
