The Zone Diet
The Zone diet is a weight loss program primarily detailed by Barry Sears in a number of books, publications and an associated website. The Zone diet isn’t specifically a weight reduction diet, however many 'zone dieters' claim that they actually manage to lose weight by following this system. The main scientific theory behind the Zone Diet is that if you manage to control the secretion of two important hormones, (insulin and glucogen), then your body releases eicosanoids which, in turn puts your body in a state of balance that is far more healthy than normal, which followers of the diet, refer to as '"he zone". Sears believes that when your body is in this 'zone' it is working at its best and, as a consequence, doesn't build up layers of fat. The most interesting procedure of the zone diet is to monitor and control the exact ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to ensure your diet has increased levels of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils. The Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last decade. Popular with many famous celebrities, it allows weight loss whilst encouraging you to eat many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, like pork and hard cheese. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet you eat protein and fat, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. It is often referred to as a low carb/high protein, weight loss regime. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including, but not limited to, cereals and pasta made from white flour. On the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish & poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. Foods high in flavonoids (inlcudes cranberry, brussels sprouts, soya & thyme) The flavonoids found in these fruits and vegetables are thought by experts to have properties as cancer fighters. Doctors who have been studying the properties of flavonoids think they also have numerous other health giving properties, amongst them, anti-asthma and anti-inflammatory powers. The majority of these also help you lose weight, so are ideal for including in your weight loss regime. |
