The Glycaemic Index Diet
The glycaemic index diet is based on the glycaemic index, a chart showing food types and a score representing the speed with which the energy of the food gets transformed to glucose in your blood stream. The claim is that slow acting food types (ie those food types with a low Glycaemic index score), keep you satiated for longer and mean that you can consume less food without being miserabl;e. It is also especially beneficial for diabetics, as the low GI types of food are beneficial in minimizing surges in glucose amount. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a weight loss program initially devised by Barry Sears in a number of books. The Zone diet isn’t specifically a fat reduction diet, however many zone diet fans claim that they actually seem to lose a few pounds by following the zone diet. The scientific theory behind the Zone Diet is that if one can limit the amount of insulin and glucogen (both hormones), then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which, in turn puts the body in a balanced state that is more wholesome than it normally is, which is known as the zone. Sears believes that if you get into this 'zone', your body is perfectly balanced and, because of this, doesn't need to build up stores of fat. The most important technique of the diet is to keep tight control over the ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to make sure your diet has large amounts of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils. Lycopene rich foods (includes apricots, red bell peppers & tomato) The chemical lypcopene is a simple pigment and one of the same family of phytochemicals as carotene. This chemical is the reason for the dark red color of quite a few fruit, vegetables and pulses. Intrestingly, unlike many healthy agents, this useful phytochemical is not damaged if it is cooked, rather it is observably made more effective by being cooked. . Its most interesting theraputic value is that it acts as an antioxidant and appears to be an asset in the fight to lower the risk of cancer. This useful phytochemical is the most potent fighter of singlet oxygen, which is associated with skin aging. It is also thought by nutritionalists to hamper the development of diseases affecting arterial blood vessels. |
