Diet informationThe Glycaemic Index Diet The gi (or glycaemic index) nutrition system is based on the glycaemic index, a list showing foods and a score representing the ease that the energy of the food type gets transformed to glucose in your bloodstream. The believe is that long-acting types of food (ie with a low Glycaemic score), suppress your appetite for longer and help to reduce your consumption of food without starving yourself. It is also extremeley useful for diabetes sufferers, as the low GI foods are useful in preventing rises in blood sugar secretion. The Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Popular with many famous celebrities, it claims to allow weight loss whilst allowing you to eat many of the foods you love, for example pork and cheeses. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. Because of this, it is known as a low carb/high protein, nutrition system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and, as a consequence, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a result, olive oil. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a diet initially devised by Barry Sears in a series of books, publications and an accompanying website. The Zone diet isn’t particularly a fat reduction diet, however many followers discover that they manage to lose a few pounds by following it. The science behind the Zone Diet is that if you can control the secretion of two important hormones, (insulin and glucogen), then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which, as a result puts your body in a balanced state that is an awful lot more healthy than normal, which is known as the zone. Sears believes that when in the 'zone', your body is perfectly balanced and, as a result, does not build up fat. The key process of the diet is to keep tight control over the ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to make sure your diet has high levels of Omega 3 fish oils. |
