Diet informationThe Glycaemic Index Diet The gi (or glycaemic index) nutrition and weightloss system is reliant on the gi index, a chart showing types of food and an indicator of the speed that the carbs of the food type gets converted to sugar in your blood stream. The theory is that slow acting foods (ie those food types with a low Gi score), keep you satisfied for a longer period of time and help to cut down on food without craving snacks all the time. It's also extremeley useful for sufferers from diabetes, as the low GI foods are helpful in preventing increases in glucose amount. The Atkins’ Diet First invented by doctor atkins in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it allows weight reduction whilst allowing foods that are normally considered bad for diets, eg fatty meat and some dairy produce. On the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is the carbs that are on the banned list. It is referred to as a high protein, low carb, nutrition and weight loss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and, as a result, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a consequence, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The controversial theory behind the famous atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbs to change into carbs, it is the carbohydrates that are burned primarily. If we eat less carbs, we will utilize the fat we already carry and we will reduce weight. This is the bit that is controversial, not all nutritionalists agree and some hold that it can be risky. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition system first suggested by Barry Sears in a series of books and publications. The Zone diet is not distinctly a weight reduction diet, although many people find that they manage to lose body weight by following the zone diet. The 'science' behind the Zone Diet is that if you manage to control the amount of insulin and glucogen (two hormones produced naturally by your body), then your body releases eicosanoids which, in turn puts the body in a state of equilibrium which is a lot more healthy than other diets, which, not surprisingly, is known as 'the zone'. Sears claims that if you get into this 'zone', your metabolism is perfectly balanced and, because of this, doesn't need to convert surplus energy to fat. The key process of the zone system is to keep tight control over the exact ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to dose yourself with increased amounts of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils. |
