Weight loss systemsThe Atkins’ Diet Now nearly 5 decades old, the atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last few years. Although not accepted by all scientists, it allows weight reduction whilst allowing many foods that are not normally available to dieters, eg pork and cheeses. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that are on the banned list. It is often referred to as a low carb/high protein, nutrition and weightloss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a result, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic of the popular atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbohydrates to convert into glucose and energy, it is the carbohydrates that are burned primarily. If we reduce your consumption of carbohydrates, our bodies will use up our fat and we will lose weight. This is the bit that is divisive, not all specialists concur and a few allege that it is often risky. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a diet first devised by Barry Sears in a number of books. The Zone diet is not expressly a fat reduction diet, although many followers believe that they actually reduce body weight by following this system. The main theory behind the Zone Diet is that if you can limit the amount of the hormones 'insulin' and 'glucogen', then anti-inflammatory chemicals are released which, as a result puts the body in a state of equilibrium which is much, much more wholesome than it normally is, this is referred to as 'the zone'. Sears claims that if you get into this 'zone', your body is perfectly balanced and, as a consequence, doesn't convert energy to unsightly fat. The most important process of the zone diet is to maintain the ratio of carbs to proteins, and to make sure your diet has large amounts of Omega 3 and omega 6. The Glycaemic Index Diet The glycaemic index nutrition and weightloss system is based around the gi (or glycaemic index), a chart showing types of food and a score illustrating the speed with which the glucose and energy of the food gets converted to sugar in the dieters bloodstream. The theory is that long-acting foods (ie those foods with a low Gi number), suppress your appetite for longer and help you to eat less food without feeling you are always hungry. It's also extremely effective for diabetes sufferers, as the low GI food types are beneficial in reducing surges in glucose secretion. |
