Foods containing allyl sulfides
( includes garlic, chives and spring onions) The onion, leek and garlic family is high in allyl sulfides, a chemical which experts believe could be linked to a reduced risk of stomach and colon cancer. Although there is very little scientific evidence at hand, allyl sulphides are also thought by nutritionalists to aid in colds, high blood pressure and physical exhaustion. Foods containing allyl sulfides also have a low calorie count, so make sure you add them to your weight loss program. Superfoods containing lycopene (includes apricot, papaya & tomato sauce) The nutrient lypcopene is a simple coloring compound and part of the same group of phytochemicals as carotene. This chemical is the agent responsible for the vivid red colour of quite a few fruits and vegetables. Unlike many vitamins, lycopene not only survives being cooked, but is noticeably enhanced by going through the cooking process. . Its most important value is that it serves as an antioxidant and seems to be of use in the fight to lower the chances of cancer. Lycopene is the most potent fighter of singlet oxygen, which is linked with aging of the skin. It's also thought to impede the progression of diseases affecting arterial blood vessels. The Atkins’ Diet Now nearly 5 decades old, the atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Although highly controversial, it claims to allow fat reduction whilst allowing many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, for example pork and some dairy produce. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet it is considered good to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that must be avoided. It is often referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, diet. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish & poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The 'science' behind the atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbs to convert into carbohydrates, it is the carbohydrates which are burned initially. If we take in less carbs, we will utilize our fat and we will become thinner. This theory is divisive, not all specialists concur and quite a few believe it might be bad for your health. |
