The Atkins’ Diet
Now nearly 5 decades old, the famous atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it supposedly allows weight reduction whilst allowing many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, eg beef and cheeses. With this diet you eat protein and fat, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is referred to as a low carb/high protein, weight loss program. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, amongst them, cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The controversial theory behind the atkins diet is that although our bodies use both fats and carbohydrates to convert into energy, it is the carbs that are burned primarily. If we consume fewer carbohydrates, we will utilise our stored fat and we will become thinner. Although inviting, this theory is divisive, not all doctors concur and some allege that it is often dangerous. Flavonoid rich foods (inlcudes citrus fruits, spinach, garden pea & cayenne) The nutrients known as flavonoids which exist in these types of food are thought by experts to have properties in helping to prevent cancer. Experts who have been studying the medical effects of flavonoids believe that they may also have many health benefits, including, but not limited to, antiviral and antiplatelet capabilities. A good number are also low in calories, so make sure you add them to your weight loss program. |
