The Atkins’ Diet Developed by dr. robert atkins in the 1960s, the atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systems over the last few years. Popular with many famous celebrities, it claims to allow fat reduction but still allows you to eat many foods that are not normally available to dieters, like meat and some dairy produce. With this diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that must be avoided. Because of this, it is known as a low carbohydrate/high protein, diet. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including, but not limited to, cereals and pasta made from white flour. On the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The 'science' behind the atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbohydrates to change into carbohydrates, it is the carbs which are burned first. If we consume fewer carbohydrates, we will burn up the fat we already carry and we will achieve weight loss. This is the bit that is controversial, not all medical experts are in agreement and quite a few allege that it is sometimes bad for your health. |
