Foods containing allyl sulfides
( includes eschalot, leeks and green onion) The onion family is rich in allyl sulfides, a chemical which experts believe may be linked to a reduced risk of stomach and colon cancer. Although there is little scientific evidence published, allyl sulfides are also thought by many researchers to reduce the symptoms of colds, high blood pressure and insomnia. Foods containing allyl sulfides are low in calories, so should be included in every diet. Carotenoid foods (includes carrots, turnip greens and winter squash) These orange and green healthy superfoods have high levels of carotenes thought by experts to help in cancer prevention, spefically cancer of the esophagus. The majority of these are also good for weight loss, so should be included in your weight loss regime. The Atkins’ Diet Although it originated back in the 1960s, the popular atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Although highly controversial, it claims to allow fat reduction whilst encouraging you to eat many of the foods you love, like fatty meat and cheeses. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet you eat protein and fat, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is often referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, weight loss regime. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including, but not limited to, cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish & poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. |
