Types of dietThe Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the famous atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it claims to allow fat reduction whilst encouraging you to eat many foods that are not normally available to dieters, eg fatty meat and eggs. On the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is the carbs that must be avoided. It is often referred to as a low carb/high protein, nutrition and weightloss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and, as a result, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a consequence, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The theory of the atkins diet is that even if our bodies use both fats and carbs to convert into energy, it is the carbs that are burned initially. If we cut down on carbohydrates, our bodies will consume the fat we already carry and we will reduce weight. This theory is contentious, not all medical experts concur and some allege that it can sometimes be risky. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi (or glycaemic index) nutrition system is based around the gi (or glycaemic index), a list showing food types and a score illustrating the speed with which the carbs of the food gets transformed to glucose in your body. The believe is that slow acting foods (ie those foods with a low Gi score), keep you satisfied for a longer period of time and help to eat less food without starving yourself. It's also very beneficial for diabetes sufferers, as the low GI food types are useful in controlling surges in blood glucose secretion. The South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a diet system invented by Cardiologist arthur agatston which stresses the consumption of "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbs" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Dr. agatston invented his weight loss system as an aid to patients with heart conditions, based on his detailed analysis of scientific research on other weight loss systems. Examples of good foods include, veal cutlets, turkey bacon, shellfish, feta cheese, almonds, lowfat yoghurt and some vegatables, such as black beans, collard greens and water chestnuts. |
