Flavonoid foods (inlcudes garlic, kohlrabi, lima bean & peppermint) The nutrients known as flavonoids found in these foods are thought to have properties as cancer fighters. Medical experts studying the nutritional effects of flavonoids think that they might also have numerous other benefits to our wellbeing, amongst them, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Most are low in calories, so should be included in every diet system. Foods containing allyl sulfides ( includes eschalot, onions and welsh onion) The onion, leek and garlic family of vegetables is rich in allyl sulphides, a chemical which experts believe might be linked to a reduced risk of stomach and colon cancer. Although there is little real proof obtainable, allyl sulfides are also thought by many experts to reduce symptoms with colds, sterilization and insomnia. Foods containing allyl sulfides are low in calories, so should be included in every diet system. The Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still widely used today. Popular with many famous celebrities, it allows weight reduction whilst encouraging you to eat foods that are normally considered bad for diets, eg fatty meat and hard cheeses. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet it is considered good to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that must be avoided. It is referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, diet system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, amongst them, cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic behind the atkins diet is that if we consume fewer carbohydrates, we will utilise the fat we have stored and we will diet successfully |
