Foods rich in lycopene (includes watermelon, red peppers and rosehip) Lycopene is a simple coloring compound and a member of the carotenid family. This chemical is the reason for the dark red color of many food types. Usefully, unlike many nutritional compounds, lycopene does not become less effective if subjected to heat, but is actually strengthened by the cooking process. . Lycoprene's most interesting medical value is that it is an antioxidant and is thought to help to reduce the chances of contracting cancer. This useful phytochemical is the most effective quencher of singlet oxygen, which is associated with skin aging. It is also thought by nutritionalists to block the development of atherosclerosis. Flavonoid rich foods (inlcudes cranberry, fennel, yams and peppermint) The large family of compounds known as flavonoids found in these types of food are thought by nutritionalists to have properties in helping to prevent cancer. Doctors looking into the medical effects of flavonoids believe that they could have numerous benefits to our wellbeing, including, but not limited to, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory activities.. The majority of these are also low in calories, so should be included in every diet system. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a weight loss program primarily devised by Barry Sears in a series of books and publications. The Zone diet is not expressly a weight loss diet, although many 'zone dieters' find that they really lose weight by following it. The 'science' behind the Zone Diet is that if you can limit the secretion of insulin and glucogen (both hormones), then anti-inflammatory chemicals are released which, as a consequence puts the body in a balanced state which is more healthy than other diets, this is referred to as 'the zone'. Sears alleges that if you get into this 'zone', your body is perfectly balanced and, because of this, does not build up layers of fat. The main procedure of the zone diet is to control the precise ratio of carbs to proteins, and to ensure your diet has plenty of Omega 3 and omega 6. |
