The Atkins’ Diet
First invented by doctor atkins in the sixities, the atkins diet is still widely used today. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it claims to allow weight loss but still allows you to eat many foods that are not normally available to dieters, for example lamb and some dairy produce. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. It is often referred to as a low carb/high protein, diet system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, amongst them, cereals and pasta made from white flour. On the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish & poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic of the atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbohydrates to burn into glucose and energy, it is the carbohydrates that are burned initially. If we eat less carbohydrates, our bodies will utilise our fat and we will become thinner. This theory is contentious, not all researchers agree and a good number of think it can be dangerous. The South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a diet system created by Dr. arthur agatston which encourages that one should consume "good carbs" instead of "bad carbs" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Agatston invented his dietary regime as an aid to patients with heart conditions, as a result of his detailed analysis of scientific studies completed on other weight loss systems. Approved foods include, lean cuts of beef, turkey breast, shrimp, ricotta cheese, peanut butter, lowfat yoghurt and some vegatables, such as lentils, broccoli and sprouts. Superfoods containing carotenes (includes paprika, turnip greens and tomato ketchup) These fruit and veg have high levels of carotenes thought by many be a key nutrient in cancer prevention, spefically cancer of the esophagus. Most are also good for weight loss, so should be included in every diet. |
