Types of dietThe Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systems over the last few years. Popular with many famous celebrities, it claims to allow fat reduction whilst encouraging you to eat many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, eg beef and egg and cheese. With the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is often referred to as a high protein, low carb, diet. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. On the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and, as a consequence, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a result, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The theory of the atkins diet is that even if our bodies use both fats and carbs to convert into carbohydrates, it is the carbs which are burned first. If we eat less carbs, our bodies will use up our stored fat and we will become thinner. This is the bit that is contentious, not all experts concur and many feel it might be unsafe. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi index nutrition system is reliant on the gi index, a chart showing types of food and a score representing the rapidity that the energy in the food gets transformed to sugar in the dieters bloodstream. The theory is that slow release types of food (ie with a low Glycaemic index score), suppress your appetite and mean that you can eat less food without feeling hungry. It's also especially beneficial for folk with diabetes, as the low GI food types are helpful in controlling increases in blood glucose levels. |
