The Atkins’ Diet
Although it originated back in the 1960s, the atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last few years. Although not accepted by all scientists, it allows fat reduction but still allows you to eat many foods that are not normally available to dieters, like lamb and eggs. With the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is often referred to as a low carbohydrate, high protein, weight loss program. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, amongst them, cereals and pasta made from white flour. With the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic behind the atkins diet is that although our bodies use both fats and carbs to convert into glucose and energy, it is the carbohydrates which are burned first. If we take in less carbs, our bodies will deplete our fat and we will get rid of some fat. This is the bit that is controversial, not all experts agree and quite a few believe it is often risky. Foods containing allyl sulfides ( includes eschalot, white onions and green onion) The onion, leek and garlic family is rich in allyl sulphides, a chemical which experts believe may be linked to a reduced risk of stomach and colon cancer. Even though there is too little definitive proof present, allyl sulphides are also thought by many researchers to reduce symptoms with colds, sterilization and fatigue. Foods containing allyl sulfides are also low in calories, so make sure you add them to your diet system. |
