Foods containing lycopene (includes guava, red peppers & tomatoes) Lycopene is a naturally occurring compound used to color foods and part of the same family of phytochemicals as carotene. Lycopene is accountable for the dark red hue of quite a few natural foods. Intrestingly, unlike numerous other nutrients, this useful phytochemical does not degrade if cooked, rather it is in fact strengthened by being cooked. . Its main advantage is that it behaves as an antioxidant and is believed to help lower the chances of contracting cancer. It is the strongest fighter of singlet oxygen, which is associated with aging of the skin. It is also thought by many researchers to impede the development of atherosclerosis. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi (or glycaemic index) diet is based on the gi index, a list of types of food and a score representing the rapidity with which the glucose in the food type gets transformed to sugar in your bloodstream. The claim is that slow acting types of food (ie those foods with a low Glycaemic score), keep you satiated for longer and help to consume fewer food without craving snacks all the time. It is also especially beneficial for folk with diabetes, as the low GI food types are beneficial in managing surges in blood sugar amount. |
