Weight loss systemsThe South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a weight loss system started by Miami-based cardiologist arthur agatston which encourages the consumption of "good carbs" instead of "bad carbohydrates" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Agatston invented his nutritional system as an aid to patients with heart conditions, as a consequence of his detailed study of scientific data completed on other weight loss regimes. Examples of good foods include, lean beef, skinless poultry, prawns, provolone cheese, almonds, eggs and some vegatables, such as kidney beans, cabbage and turnips. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition and weight loss system initially invented by Barry Sears in a number of books. The Zone diet isn’t expressly a weight loss diet, nevertheless many 'zone dieters' claim that they actually manage to lose a few pounds when following it. The 'science' claimed for the Zone Diet is that if you manage to limit the levels of insulin and glucogen (two hormones produced naturally by your body), then anti-inflammatory chemicals are released which puts the body in a state of equilibrium which is much more wholesome than usual, which is known as the zone. Sears states that when your body is in this 'zone' it is perfectly balanced and, as a result, does not build up layers of fat. The main process of the zone system is to monitor and control the ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to take high levels of Omega 3 fish oils. The Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it claims to allow fat reduction but still allows you to eat many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, eg fatty meat and some dairy produce. With the atkins diet you eat protein and fat, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. It is often referred to as a high protein, low carb, diet. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic behind the atkins diet is that although our bodies use both fats and carbohydrates to transform into glucose, it is the carbohydrates that are burned initially. If we eat less carbs, we will use up the fat we already carry and we will become thinner. This theory is controversial, not all nutritionalists concur and a few believe it might be dangerous. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi index nutrition and weightloss system is based on the gi (or glycaemic index), a list showing types of food and an indicator of the ease with which the glucose in the food type gets converted to glucose in the dieters blood stream. The claim is that slow acting types of food (ie those food types with a low Gi number), suppress your appetite for longer and help you to eat less food without feeling you are always hungry. It's also extremely efficient for diabetics, as the low GI foods are helpful in minimizing surges in blood sugar secretion. |
