The Atkins’ Diet
Now nearly 5 decades old, the atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systms over the last few years. Although not accepted by all scientists, it allows fat reduction but still allows you to eat many of the foods you love, like meat and hard cheeses. With this diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is the carbs that are on the banned list. It is referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, weight loss regime. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic of the famous atkins diet is that although our bodies use both fats and carbs to change into carbs, it is the carbohydrates that are burned first. If we eat less carbs, our bodies will burn up the fat we already carry and we will become thinner. This theory is contentious, not all medical experts concur and many hold that it is sometimes dangerous. Low calorie diet Rather obviously, low calorie diet is based on the fact that if you want to achieve weight loss, it is important to eat less calories than you need. Definition of a calorie? A calorie is a measurement of the energy provided by food. A 'calorie' is the amount of heat required to raise 1 kilogram of water 1 degree centigrade. If a food contains more calories, then it will gives you more energy when consumed. Foods low in calories include cabbage, carrots, apricot, lean ham, and white eggs. Carotenoid foods (includes carrots, rose hip puree and tomato ketchup) These vegetables and fruits contain the carotenoids believed by doctors be a key nutrient in preventing cancer, particularly those cancers involving the esophagus. The majority of these are also good for weight loss, so should be a part of every weight loss program. |
