Weight loss systemsThe Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the popular atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systems over the last few years. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it claims to allow fat reduction but still allows you to eat many foods that are not normally available to dieters, eg beef and hard cheese. With the atkins diet it is considered good to eat fat and protein, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. Because of this, it is known as a low carbohydrate, high protein, nutrition and weightloss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and, as a consequence, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic behind the atkins diet is that if we eat less carbohydrates, we will deplete our fat and we will reduce weight The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi index diet is based around the glycaemic index, a list of food types and a score representing the speed with which the carbs in the food gets changed to sugar in your blood stream. The claim is that slow release foods (ie those food types with a low Glycaemic index score), will keep you feeling full for longer and mean that you can reduce your intake of food without feeling you are missing out. It is also extremely useful for people with diabetes, as the low GI food types are beneficial in preventing increases in blood sugar levels. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition and weight loss system initially invented by Barry Sears in a series of books, publications and an associated web site. The Zone diet isn’t expressly a fat reduction diet, but many followers find that they really manage to lose body weight by following it. The main theory behind the Zone Diet is that if one can gain control of the secretion of insulin and glucogen (both hormones), then your body releases eicosanoids which, as a result puts your body in a state of balance that is an awful lot more healthful than normal, which is known as the zone. Sears states that a body that is in 'the zone' is perfectly balanced and, as a consequence, doesn't build up fat. The most important method of the zone diet is to keep tight control over the exact ratio of carbs to proteins, and to take increased levels of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils. |
