The Atkins’ Diet
First invented by doctor atkins in the sixities, the atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systems over the last few years. Popular with many famous celebrities, it allows weight reduction whilst still eating many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, for example lamb and butter. On the atkins diet it is considered good to eat fat and protein, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is often referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, weight loss program. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including, but not limited to, cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The theory of the atkins diet is that if we consume less carbohydrates, our bodies will utilize the fat we have stored and we will diet successfully The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a diet primarily suggested by Barry Sears in a series of books. The Zone diet isn’t exactly a weight reduction diet, but some people claim that they actually manage to lose body weight when following it. The scientific theory behind the Zone Diet is that if you can control the secretion of two key hormones, (insulin and glucogen), then anti-inflammatory chemicals are released which, as a consequence puts your body in a state of equilibrium which is more wholesome than normal, known as the 'zone'. Sears alleges that if you get into this 'zone', your metabolism is working at its most efficient and, as a result, doesn't build up layers of fat. The main technique of the diet is to maintain the exact ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to ensure you get increased amounts of Omega 3 fish oils. Wonder foods with carotenes (includes paprika, collard greens and winter squash) These vegetables and fruits are rich in the carotenoids believed to play a role in minimizing the chances of contracting, spefically cancer of the esophagus. Most also have a low calorie count, so should be a part of every diet. |
