Diet informationThe Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition system primarily created by Barry Sears in a number of books, publications and an associated website. The Zone diet is not exactly a weight reduction diet, but many 'zone dieters' find that they actually manage to lose a few pounds by following it. The main scientific theory behind the Zone Diet is that if one can manage to control the levels of the hormones 'insulin' and 'glucogen', then your body releases eicosanoids which, as a consequence puts the body in a balanced state that is more wholesome than other diets, which, not surprisingly, is known as 'the zone'. Sears claims that a body that is in 'the zone' is much more efficient and, as a consequence, doesn't build up layers of fat. The key method of the system is to monitor and control the precise ratio of carbs to proteins, and to dose yourself with large amounts of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi (or glycaemic index) nutrition system is based around the gi index, a list of food types and a score illustrating the ease that the energy in the food gets converted to sugar in the dieters blood stream. The believe is that long-acting foods (ie those with a low Gi score), suppress your appetite and help to reduce your consumption of food without starving yourself. It is also extremely efficient for individuals with diabetes, as the low GI types of food are useful in controlling increases in blood sugar secretion. The Atkins’ Diet Although it originated back in the 1960s, the atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systems over the last few years. Popular with many famous celebrities, it enables fat reduction whilst allowing you to eat many foods that are not normally available to dieters, like meat and butter. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet it is considered good to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that must be avoided. It is often referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, nutrition and weightloss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and, as a result, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic of the atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbs to transform into energy, it is the carbohydrates which are burned primarily. If we reduce your intake of carbohydrates, our bodies will utilize the fat we already carry and we will achieve weight loss. This is the bit that is contentious, not all experts are in agreement and many think it can sometimes be dangerous. |
