Diet typesThe Glycaemic Index Diet The gi index nutrition and weightloss system is based on the gi (or glycaemic index), a chart showing food types and a score illustrating the speed with which the carbs in the food gets changed to glucose in your body. The theory is that slow acting foods (ie those food types with a low Glycaemic score), suppress your appetite and mean that you can cut down on food without being miserabl;e. It is also extremeley useful for individuals with diabetes, as the low GI food types are helpful in controlling surges in blood glucose secretion. The South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a diet started by Dr. arthur agatston which stresses that one should eat "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbs" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Dr. agatston invented his system for his cardiac patients, as a result of his detailed study of scientific data on other diets. "good" foods include, lean beef, chicken breast, oysters, fat-free cheeses, pistachio nuts, lowfat milk and certain vegetables, like black beans, cauliflower and spinach. The Atkins’ Diet Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Although highly controversial, it supposedly allows weight reduction whilst allowing you to eat many of the foods you love, eg bacon and hard cheese. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is the carbs that must be avoided. It is referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, nutrition and weightloss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a result, olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The theory of the atkins diet is that although our bodies use both fats and carbs to convert into carbohydrates, it is the carbohydrates that are burned first. If we eat less carbs, our bodies will burn up the fat we have stored and we will achieve weight loss. Although tempting, the atkins diet is contentious, not all specialists agree and some experts hold that it is sometimes dangerous. |
