Diet types

The Zone Diet
The Zone diet is a nutrition and weightloss system primarily devised by Barry Sears in a number of books, publications and an accompanying website. The Zone diet isn’t exactly a fat reduction diet, but many 'zone dieters' discover that they manage to lose weight by following it.
The scientific theory behind the Zone Diet is that if you can limit the levels of the hormones 'insulin' and 'glucogen', then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which puts the body in a state of equilibrium which is much more wholesome than other diets, this is referred to as 'the zone'.
Sears states that if you get into this 'zone', your metabolism is much more efficient and, as a result, does not build up fat.
The key method of the zone system is to control the exact ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to dose yourself with increased levels of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils.

The Atkins’ Diet
First invented by doctor atkins in the sixities, the atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Although not accepted by all scientists, it enables fat reduction but still allows you to eat foods that are normally considered bad for diets, like bacon and hard cheese.
On the atkins diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. It is referred to as a low carb/high protein, diet.
With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour.
Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and, as a result, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a consequence, olive oil.

The Glycaemic Index Diet
The gi index nutrition and weightloss system is based around the gi index, a chart showing food types and an indicator of the ease with which the energy in the food gets transformed to sugar in your body. The theory is that slow acting food types (ie those food types with a low Glycaemic index score), keep you satisfied for a longer period of time and mean that you can reduce your intake of food without being miserabl;e.
It's also extremeley useful for sufferers from diabetes, as the low GI types of food are useful in minimizing rises in glucose amount.

The South Beach Diet
The South Beach diet is a diet created by Miami, florida-area cardiologist arthur agatston which stresses the consumption of "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbs" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats"
Doctor agatston invented his system for people who have cardiac problems, as a result of his analysis of scientific data completed on other nutritional studies.
Approved foods include, lean cuts of beef, skinless poultry, clams, fat-free cheeses, pistachios, lowfat yoghurt and some vegatables, like split peas, cabbage and water chestnuts.

"A diet is the penalty we pay for exceeding the feed limit."

"Reality check: you can never, ever, use weight loss to solve problems that are not related to your weight. At your goal weight or not, you still have to live with yourself and deal with your problems. You will still have the same husband, the same job, the same kids, and the same life. Losing weight is not a cure for life"
