The Atkins’ Diet
Originating way back in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still widely used today. Although not accepted by all scientists, it claims to allow fat reduction whilst allowing you to eat foods that are normally considered bad for diets, eg beef and hard cheeses. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet you eat protein and fat, it is carbohydrates that need to be avoided. It is often referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, diet system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including, but not limited to, cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are still nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. A low calorie weight loss regime In short, the low calorie diet states that if you plan to achieve weight loss, it is essential to injest less calories than you need for exercise. Definition of a calorie? The calorie is the standard unit for energy measurement in dieting. A 'calorie' is the amount of heat required to raise 1 kilogram of water 1 degree centigrade. If something contains more calories, then it will provide your body with a larger amount of energy when eaten. Examples of low calorie foods include brussels sprouts, cabbage, guava, lower fat hot-dogs, and eggs. Superfoods rich in flavonoids (inlcudes lettuce, kale, lima bean and dill) The nutrients called 'flavonoids' which are present in these types of food are thought by nutritionalists to have properties in preventing cancer. Nutritionalists investigating the properties of flavonoids believe they may well also have many other healthy properties, amongst them, anti-candida and antitumor capabilities. Most are low in calories, so are ideal for including in your weight loss regime. |
