The Atkins’ Diet
Developed by dr. robert atkins in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still widely used today. Popular with many famous celebrities, it enables weight reduction whilst still eating many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, for example bacon and hard cheeses. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, it is the carbs that must be avoided. It is referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, diet system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. Foods containing allyl sulfides ( includes garlic, chives and welsh onion) The onion and garlic range of vegetables is rich in allyl sulfides, a chemical which experts believe might be linked to a reduced risk of stomach and colon cancer. Although there is as yet, not enough definitive proof at hand, allyl sulphides are also thought by many researchers to reduce the symptoms of antiinflammatory effect, arteriosclerosis and insomnia. Foods containing allyl sulfides also help you lose weight, so should be included in every weight loss regime. |
