The Atkins’ Diet Now nearly 5 decades old, the atkins diet is still one of the most popular diets today. Although highly controversial, it allows weight loss whilst allowing many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, such as lamb and egg and cheese. With the atkins diet you eat protein and fat, it is the carbs that are on the banned list. Because of this, it is known as a low carb/high protein, nutrition and weight loss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The controversial theory behind the famous atkins diet is that if we reduce your intake of carbs, our bodies will use up our fat and we will reduce weight The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition and weight loss system primarily detailed by Barry Sears in a series of books. The Zone diet is not particularly a fat reduction diet, but many zone diet followers discover that they manage to lose weight by following this system. The main theory behind the Zone Diet is that if you limit the levels of the hormones 'insulin' and 'glucogen', then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which, in turn puts your body in a balanced state that is far more healthy than normal, which, not surprisingly, is known as 'the zone'. Sears alleges that when your body is in this 'zone' it is much more efficient and, because of this, doesn't need to convert surplus energy to fat. The main method of the system is to monitor and control the exact ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and to dose yourself with increased amounts of Omega 6 and omega 3 fish oils. |
